KP Government Takes Steps to Restore Student Unions
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has started formal consultations to restore student unions in universities and colleges across the province. This move is being seen as an important step toward strengthening student representation and democratic culture in educational institutions.
The issue was discussed in a high-level meeting chaired by KP Minister for Higher Education and Local Government, Mina Khan Afridi. Officials from the Higher Education Department and representatives of different student organizations attended the meeting. During the session, participants reviewed different proposals related to the revival of student unions.
Leaders from major student groups, including Islami Jamiat Talaba, Insaf Students Federation, Peoples Students Federation, Pakhtunkhwa Students Organization, and others, shared their views and recommendations. They highlighted the need for a fair, transparent, and peaceful system that allows students to participate in leadership roles without disrupting academic activities.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the approval of a special committee to work on the restoration plan. The committee will be headed by Musharraf Afridi, the provincial president of the Insaf Students Federation. It will also include representatives from the Higher Education Department and leaders from various student organizations to ensure balanced input.
The committee has been given 15 days to finalize its recommendations. After that, the proposals will be presented in another meeting chaired by the higher education minister. The goal is to create a consensus-based and practical framework that can be implemented smoothly across KP’s higher education institutions.
While addressing the meeting, Mina Khan Afridi said the provincial government is serious about restoring student unions at the earliest. He emphasized that student unions play a key role in developing democratic and capable leadership, not only at the provincial level but also nationally.
The minister further stated that student unions can help reduce dynastic politics, feudal thinking, and elite dominance in society. By giving students a platform to raise their voices, unions can promote merit, awareness, and political maturity among the youth.
He added that restoring student unions will provide young people with meaningful opportunities to participate in democratic processes, learn leadership skills, and represent student issues in a structured way.
Overall, the KP government’s move to restore student unions is being welcomed by student bodies and education stakeholders. If implemented successfully, it could mark a positive change for student politics and youth engagement in the province.
