Barcelona Plans Lionel Messi Statue at Camp Nou
Barcelona has announced plans to immortalize Lionel Messi at Camp Nou with a statue, recognizing the football legend’s unparalleled contributions to the club.
The announcement came from Barcelona president Joan Laporta during a book presentation about La Masia, the club’s famed youth academy. Laporta highlighted Messi’s significance, stating that the forward deserves a tribute alongside iconic figures like Ladislao Kubala and Johan Cruyff. “He is one of those players who have defined an era for all of us,” Laporta remarked.
Messi, 38, made a surprise visit to Camp Nou before joining the Argentina national team in Spain. Sharing photos on social media, he expressed hope to “return for the goodbye I never got to say as a player,” reflecting the emotional connection he maintains with the club.
The Argentine superstar left Barcelona in August 2021 as a free agent due to the club’s financial challenges. During his 21-year career at Barça, Messi won 34 titles, became the club’s top scorer, and holds the record for most appearances.
Laporta emphasized that Covid restrictions at the time prevented Messi from receiving a proper farewell. The upcoming statue will not only celebrate his legacy but also give fans and the club a lasting symbol of appreciation for one of football’s greatest players.
