ISLAMABAD – In a move that has sparked widespread excitement among students across the federal capital, the government has officially announced a spring break for all educational institutions. According to a notification released by the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) on Friday, all government schools and colleges in Islamabad will observe a holiday period starting from March 24.
While the notification specifically outlines the “Spring Break” from March 24 to March 27, the reality for students and staff is a much longer “super break.” By strategically aligning these dates with the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, Pakistan Day, and weekends, the federal capital’s education sector is looking at an uninterrupted 11-day hiatus.
The Festive Alignment
The decision to bridge the gap between national holidays and the spring season ensures that families can celebrate without the stress of mid-week school runs. Since Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to fall around March 21 (subject to the sighting of the moon), the timeline essentially allows students to finish their last day of classes on March 18 and not return until Monday, March 30.
Officials noted that this synchronization is a routine measure designed to provide a much-needed breather for both students and faculty after the high-pressure environment of annual examinations. “This is about balancing academic requirements with our cultural and religious observances,” one official stated. “It gives everyone a chance to recharge before the new academic term begins in earnest.”
Atmosphere in the Capital
The announcement comes as Islamabad experiences a shift in weather, with thick, cool clouds frequently hovering over landmarks like the Faisal Mosque. This spring-like atmosphere has only added to the festive mood in the city. Parents have welcomed the clarity provided by the FDE, noting that the advance notice allows for better travel planning, especially for those heading to their hometowns for Eid.

Mandatory Return and Admissions
However, the break isn’t entirely “pencils down” for everyone. The FDE has made it clear that while students enjoy their time off, the admission process for the upcoming session must continue without interruption. Furthermore, all teaching and administrative staff are required to be back at full strength on March 30. This day has been marked as mandatory for the final compilation and announcement of in-house annual results, ensuring that the transition into the next grade is seamless.
For now, the hallways of Islamabad’s model schools and colleges are filled with the hum of holiday plans. As the city prepares for the dual celebration of Spring and Eid, the “Spring Break” of 2026 is set to be one of the most memorable stretches of downtime the capital has seen in recent years.
