LAHORE — Punjab has taken a significant step toward enhancing technical and vocational education by approving the establishment of its first Skill City, aimed at equipping youth with practical skills aligned with industry demands. The announcement was made by Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who emphasized the need for modern, industry-oriented education to increase employability among young Pakistanis.
The proposed Skill City will serve as a hub for Technical Education Institutes across the province, designed to meet contemporary industrial requirements. Chief Minister Sharif has called for detailed proposals and plans to ensure that the project not only imparts education but also establishes centers of excellence for skill development. According to officials, the initiative is expected to create multiple pathways for young people to gain meaningful employment immediately after completing matriculation.
To ensure international standards of education, the Technical and Vocational Education Board of Punjab has agreed to affiliate the Skill City’s institutions with counterparts in Scotland and the broader United Kingdom. This partnership is aimed at bringing global best practices, technical expertise, and updated curricula to the province’s vocational education sector.
The Skill City will offer a diverse range of programs, combining practical, technical, and creative fields to meet the needs of modern industries. Courses will include Graphic Designing, Media Production, Fashion Designing, Data Coding, and Tourism Expert training, alongside technical and industrial programs such as Industrial Electrician, Plumbing, Solar Water Heating Systems, Professional Chef, and Allied Health Professional programs. The varied offerings are designed to cater to both emerging sectors and traditional trades, giving students a competitive edge in the job market.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has stressed the importance of hiring high-quality teachers for these institutions and has called for collaboration with industry experts to design syllabi that equip students with relevant, market-ready skills. The involvement of industry professionals will help ensure that graduates are not only trained theoretically but are also prepared to meet real-world workplace challenges immediately upon entering the workforce.
