Why Are Pakistani Students Choosing STEM Programs in the US?

Pakistani students are increasingly choosing STEM programs in the United States, even at a time when overall international student enrolment is slowing down. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and these fields are now seen as the most practical and career focused options for students from Pakistan.

During the 2024–25 academic year, the United States hosted nearly 1.2 million international students. However, new international enrolment dropped by 7 percent, mainly because graduate enrolments fell by 15 percent. Despite this overall decline, Pakistani students continued to grow in number, especially in STEM-related degrees.

One major reason is the strong demand for tech and engineering skills worldwide. More than 55 percent of Pakistani students in the US were enrolled in STEM programs in 2024–25. Among them, 21 percent chose mathematics and computer science, while almost 20 percent enrolled in engineering programs. These fields are closely linked with high-paying jobs, innovation, and global career opportunities.

Another important factor is the growth in undergraduate and postgraduate enrolment from Pakistan. Undergraduate enrolment increased by 26 percent, while postgraduate enrolment grew by 18 percent during the same period. This is notable because graduate enrolment from international students overall was declining across the US. It shows that Pakistani students are still confident about the value of a US degree.

Pakistani students are also becoming more career-focused and practical in their choices. Many students now look beyond education and think about what comes next after graduation. This is where Optional Practical Training (OPT) plays a key role. OPT allows international students to work in the US after completing their degree, especially in STEM fields where extended work permits are available. The rising number of Pakistani students opting for OPT shows their strong interest in gaining US work experience.

According to ApplyBoard’s Fall 2025 Recruitment Partner Pulse Survey, post-study work opportunities are now almost as important as study costs. About 88 percent of students prioritize work opportunities, while 91 percent focus on affordability. This data clearly shows that students are making outcome-driven decisions, choosing countries and programs that offer both education and employment pathways.

STEM programs in the US offer modern research facilities, industry connections, and global recognition, which attract Pakistani students who want long-term career growth. Fields like computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, and engineering are especially popular because they match the needs of the global job market.

In simple words, Pakistani students are choosing STEM programs in the US because these degrees offer better job prospects, practical skills, post-study work options, and long-term career stability. Even with global enrolment challenges, Pakistan’s growing presence in US STEM education highlights a clear shift toward smart, future-focused educational choices.
