WhatsApp has announced that it would not service older smartphones as from 2025. This is because the messenger is developing its platform for better performance and security, leaving all old devices behind. The old phones that run the older version of the operating system may no longer access the application. When do I lose access?
WhatsApp will end support for devices older than “KitKat version 4.4” from January 1, 2025. The company will also stop supporting versions of iOS older than “15.1” for iPhone users starting from May 5, 2025.
The WhatsApp application needs to be updated from time to time to become compatible with newer hardware and software. Older versions of an operating system do not support the kind of technology or security which updates the application of WhatsApp. To stay safe, reliable, and featureful, WhatsApp must withdraw support for older versions of an OS.
This can affect the user in the following ways:
If the operating system in your phone is outdated, the application of WhatsApp will not be available after the following dates. The user has either:
- Upgraded the phone to another new one.
- Upgraded the operating system if the mobile phone is supported.
Most older mobile phones, however don’t get any official upgrades from the original manufacturer. Even if some geeky adventurous customers would try a few homemade, unsecured upgrades, most such acts will leave warranties voided or worse, physically harm the equipment.
Affected Devices
If you own any of these devices, your unit may be affected by this update:
Android Mobile Phones
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
iPhones
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
These versions of the iPhone can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7, so you will not receive the chance to install any update on this iPhone like iOS 15.1 or any later updates.
WhatsApp Business is Also Affected
Change does not hit the old WhatsApp application but WhatsApp Business as well. People have to find new ones and stick to a new one and continue interacting with the businessperson clients.
What do I do?
To lose access on WhatsApp, do the following:
- Check Your Operating System: Open cell phone settings and check out the OS version.
- Upgrade your mobile: If there is an updated version of OS that would support your mobile, make sure it updates before the set date.
- Upgrade to a New One: If the software does not update on your current mobile phone, then perhaps it is time to upgrade to the latest one.
Why it Matters Change means WhatsApp is removing all those old devices so this:
- Improves app performance.
- Introduce new features that are only possible on modern operating systems.Â
- Strengthen security to protect user data.Â
